In August 1965, Jonathan Daniels, a seminarian at Episcopal Theological Seminary (later Episcopal Divinity School), was assassinated by a white supremacist outside of Selma, AL for his work involving voter registration and civil rights. Daniels is a martyred saint in the Episcopal Church and his feast day is August 14. In commemoration of his Christian witness for justice and the sacrificial offering of his life, St. Luke’s will hold its 2nd annual Gun Violence Awareness Vigil, Wednesday August 14 at Liberty Plaza (Georgia Capitol) from 11:30-12:30 p.m. The Vigil will include a liturgy opposing gun violence and reading the names of all those whose lives were lost to gun violence in the state of Georgia during the last year. In addition to faith and community groups, all St. Luke’s parishioners and other Episcopalians are invited to attend along with clergy and parishioners of all faith and/or social backgrounds.
