The next quiet day on April 13, 2019 will be in preparation for Holy Week. Entitled “Lazarus, Come Out: Reflections on John 11,” it will be led by New Testament scholar and poet, Bonnie Thurston. We will examine the passage as a play in three acts, each focusing on a different spiritual teaching. In the Orthodox Church the Saturday before Palm Sunday is “Lazarus Saturday.” The traditional writing of the icon of the raising of Lazarus will be introduced. As we enter Holy Week, John 11 issues a timeless challenge to awaken us to awareness and aliveness. It encourages us to leave behind what is dead and to respond to Christ’s call to liberation.
Bonnie Thurston is a New Testament scholar and poet, an ordained Disciples of Christ minister, a licensed Episcopal preacher and lay reader, and an experienced retreat leader. She is the author or editor of twenty-two theological books, including Hidden in God: Discovering the Desert Vision of Charles de Foucauld, and six collections of poetry. Thurston taught at the university level for thirty years and served as a pastor of five churches and twice in overseas ministries. She is also a founding member and past president of the International Thomas Merton Society.
