The Episcopal Diocese of Atlanta’s Commission on Domestic Minor Sex Trafficking (DMST) is a body of concerned lay and clergy representatives whose mission is to consolidate our efforts and provide resources and networking support to parishes who are working to end DMST.

The Scope of the Problem

  • DMST is a national problem; Atlanta is one of the top sex trafficking hubs in the United States.

  • In Atlanta alone, the underground commercial sex economy is estimated to be worth approximately $290 million a year, with traffickers making an average of $33,000 per week*

  • 354 minors are sold for sex to 7,200 men per month.  Including repeat purchases, these men pay for an estimated 8,770 sex acts per month. As a result, each child can be exploited multiple times per month and even per day.  The average age of entrapment is 12-14 years of age.

  • One in three children are solicited for sex within 48 hours of running away or becoming homeless.

Let’s take ACTION.

On Saturday, January 26, 2019, from 9:30am-3:30pm, the Commission invites you and representatives from all 114 worshiping communities in the Episcopal Diocese of Atlanta to participate in SOAP UP Atlanta, an educational and interactive service event. We will learn from the founder of S.O.A.P., Theresa Flores, who will share her personal experience of being trafficked at age 15.  And we will prepare to distribute the soap we label (with the National Trafficking Hotline) to the hotels surrounding the Mercedes Benz stadium.  We will do this work just before Super Bowl 2019 is hosted in Atlanta; sex trafficking is known to increase around such large events.

Please register to attend:    We are asking each congregation to participate.  Select 2-3 people from your parish and register soon as we are limited to 200 volunteers.  We will open the opportunity for more volunteers at a later date if needed. We hope to welcome your parish participants to this exciting Diocesan wide SOAP event.

Note that lunch will be served following our soap labeling project and time of education.  Teams of four will deliver the soap and education materials to the hotels in the afternoon.  We will debrief before departure.  The full agenda is on the registration page.

Choose your level of participation:

  1. Donate $150 to help pay for soap and expenses

  2. Label Soap and prepare educational folders

  3. Deliver soap and materials to hotels

  4. Participate in all of the above

When:  Saturday, January 26, 2019 from 9:30am – 3:30pm,

Where:   All Saints’ Episcopal Church, 634 W. Peachtree St., NW, Atlanta, GA 30308 (at the North Ave. MARTA station)

Donations welcome:  We welcome your contribution to fund this event and the supplies needed to provide a potentially life-saving bar of soap to Atlanta’s hotels.  Please make donations payable to the Episcopal Diocese of Atlanta, Memo: DMST Commission SOAP UP Atlanta; 2744 Peachtree Road, NW, Atlanta GA 30305.  Donations may also be made online through the registration website.
