Russell Levenson to preach on ‘Day 1’

Russell Levenson to preach on ‘Day 1’
Director of St. Martin’s Episcopal Church, Houston

The Rev. Dr. Russell Levenson, rector of St. Martin’s Episcopal Church in Houston, is the featured preacher Feb. 12 and 19 on “Day 1” with host Peter Wallace, the nationally broadcast ecumenical radio program also accessible online at
A graduate of Birmingham-Southern College, Levenson earned an M.Div. at Virginia Theological Seminary. While there he served at historic Christ Church in Old Town Alexandra. After seminary he served as assistant chaplain at the University of the South in Sewanee, Tenn., until he was called to St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in his home town of Birmingham, Ala. He earned a D.Min. at Beeson Divinity School of Samford University in Birmingham. Before coming to St. Martin’s in 2007, he also served churches in Lafayette, La., and Pensacola. St. Martin’s is the largest Episcopal church in the nation.

Levenson is the author of several articles in magazines and religious journals. He has written three devotional books and is finishing a fourth, “Autumn Leaves.” With his wife he wrote “An Advent Wreath Devotional,” suitable for adults and families,  and a version for children.

“Living Happily Ever After,” Levenson’s sermon for Feb. 12, is drawn from Matthew 5:21-37 and Deuteronomy 30:15-20.  “Two days from now is Valentine’s Day, a day we think on love stories,” he says. “And you and I know that most love stories that we enjoy end with those words, ‘And they lived happily ever after.’ Is that a pipe dream, is that fantasy, or is it really possible to be happy… and not just happy, but happy ever after?”

“How Do You Love Thee?,” Levenson’s sermon for Feb. 19, is based on part of Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount found in Matthew 5:13-20.  He says, “We get so used to defining righteousness and the Christian way of doing things as whatever it is we have grown accustomed to that we are no longer open to the surprises God has in store for us.”

The program includes interviews with Levenson by Wallace, who is also executive producer.

“Day 1” has been broadcast every week for 71 years, formerly as “The Protestant Hour.” Featuring outstanding preachers from the mainline denominations, “Day 1” is currently distributed to more than 200 radio stations across America and overseas.
